Sponsored Stories – The value of your LIKE

When you like something, how much do you really like something? Or are you one of those people that is a serial “Liker”?  There is this fantastic Google Hangout I was a part of with a guy called +Craig Chamberlin on “Internet Privacy. You have none.”  At some point put an hour aside to have a listen to what he has to say (seriously such a fangirl of this guy it’s not even funny), I get really sad when I miss his Google Hangouts because a lot of what he has to say resonates with what I believe.

One of the points Craig brings up is something that a lot of us in the digital space know.  What we know is that privacy on the Internet, just simply doesn’t exist.  If I want true privacy, I wouldn’t be on the Internet, I would be on a beach, with one of those old Nokia’s with buttons, playing a game of snake and sipping on a Pina Colada.

Anyway back to what I was saying about how much value do you hold to your “Like” do you value it nearly as much as we do as businesses? Or are you completely unaware. There have been several articles recently about Facebook doing away with the “Sponsored Stories” feature, which basically enables Facebook to advertise to your friends that you have “liked” a particular business or brand. (At the time of writing this, I have yet to find any official announcments from Facebook themselves.)

Sponsored StoriesFor those of you reading this who live in Australia you might remember our recent elections and the resulting uproar when the Political Parties went the way of Social Media to promote themselves and their policies using the “Sponsored Stories” feature.  In fact I was the recipient of numerous upset message from friends who were upset to see my name next to the Ad promoting a particular political party who shall remain nameless.  What they forgot was the type of business I run, that being specifically a business in social media and took a bit of convincing that I hadn’t jumped the fence to the enemy camp and really all I was doing was research.  What I learnt from that was that my Facebook “friends” held quite my like almost as an unofficial endorsement.

Did you know you can control who see’s what in relation to Facebook Ad’s? I personally want my friends & family to see the things I’ve liked, mostly because a lot of them are small businesses using the platform to grow their business, if my face is going to be the thing that sways their buying decision, then so be it! Really it will save me having to remember to have that conversation about that great experience in this shop or with this business.  I’m getting older, my memory IS getting worse.
